Man charged with murder in Catawba County homicide

The victim was found after a coworker requested a welfare check by police when he did not show up for work Wednesday.

NEWTON, N.C. — A man wanted in connection with a Catawba County homicide was arrested late Thursday, police said. 

According to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, Justin Drew Dalton, 32, is charged with murder after his vehicle was spotted in Hickory. Dalton was arrested after he tried to run away from officers, the sheriff's office said. 

On Wednesday, Emden Lee Syres Jr. was found dead in a home on Sigmon Dairy Road in Newton. Syres was found after a coworker requested a welfare check by police when he did not show up for work. Deputies believe Syres had been dead for 24-48 hours before being found.

Dalton was identified as a person of interest in the case. On Thursday, warrants were issued for his arrest. He was also wanted or child abuse and driving on a revoked license in Alexander County.
