CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte’s growing number of homicides could be delaying the district attorney’s final decision in the police shooting death of Danquirs Franklin.
The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s office has still not finished its review of the officer-involved shooting outside the Burger King on Beatties Ford Road earlier this year.
This week marks 90 days since the district attorney received the case from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The agency’s goal is to complete a review within 90 days.
"The amount of time it takes to review a file is dependent on many factors, including external factors such as other homicides and officer-involved shootings, which also demand significant time commitments for our personnel," spokesperson Meghan McDonald said.
"It's also important to note that external factors can impact the length of a review as members of the DA's Homicide Team also respond to homicide crime scenes, try cases and maintain case inventories," she added.
The agency's protocol says a review may take longer if prosecutors request additional investigation.
McDonald said this review is not the first to take more than 90 days.
