1 dead after house fire in northwest Charlotte, estimated $95K in damage

Charlotte Fire reports one person has died after a house fire in northwest Charlotte early Saturday morning.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Firefighters say one person was killed in a northwest Charlotte house fire Saturday morning.

Crews responded to a fire that broke out at a home in the 9400 block of Northwoods Forest Drive around 3 a.m. A man was transported for life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead.

Charlotte Fire said the fire was started by unattended cooking items.

A neighbor told NBC Charlotte's Rachel Lundberg he was hanging out with a group of friends Friday night and when they got home, they saw the fire.

The victim's family member, who told NBC Charlotte the man killed in the fire was "Donovan," said he is still in disbelief.

"Sad, numb, shocked... definitely wasn't expecting this," said the victim's family member Leander Gaymon.

"It was just one of those situations where we got to deal with it and to know the details would probably make me feel even worse," he added.

The damage is estimated at $95,000.

Authorities have not released the deceased man's identity.
