CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Five years ago, UNC Charlotte became the site of yet another mass shooting that left two students dead and four others wounded after gunfire erupted inside a classroom.
Tuesday, April 30, marked five years since a gunman opened fire on the final day of class inside Kennedy Hall. Two students, Reed Parlier and Riley Howell, were killed. Four others were hurt: Drew Pescaro, Rami Alramadhan, Emily Houpt and Sean Dehart.
The school held a brief wreath-laying ceremony Tuesday morning to commemorate the tragic events of that day.
Monday night, after four law enforcement officers were killed and four others were injured after being met with "active gunfire" while trying to serve warrants in east Charlotte, UNC Charlotte released a statement of support for the community.
"Almost exactly five years ago, many officers, including agencies affected by today's shooting, came running to our aid," the statement reads in part. "Tonight, our hearts are heavy as our thoughts are with the families of the three U.S. Marshals who lost their lives, the injured officers, CMPD and all responding law enforcement agencies."
After CMPD confirmed a fourth officer had died, UNC Charlotte shared, "The hearts of Niner Nation go out to @CMPD and the family of Officer Joshua Eyer, who was also lost in the line of duty today."
