ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Albemarle Police Chief Jason Bollhorst resigned from the department Tuesday, according to a release from the city of Albemarle.
Bollhorst served as chief for three years and previously spent 26 years with the City of Newport News Police Department in Virginia. City officials have not responded to questions regarding why Bollhorst resigned.
Penny Dunn was selected to serve as interim chief while a search begins for a new chief of police. She previously served as police chief for the Davidson Police Department from 2017 until her retirement in 2023.
Dunn has previously worked in criminal investigations, overseeing day and night shifts and leading specialized units.
Albemarle is located about 40 miles east of Charlotte and is the county seat of Stanly County, North Carolina. The Albemarle Police Department has 52 sworn officers and seven civilian personnel.
