Inmates moved from Avery County as jail suffers water, power outages

These outages are direct impacts of Hurricane Helene.

AVERY COUNTY, N.C. — The disastrous conditions in counties around the North Carolina mountains are forcing resources to be shifted to other parts of the state.

Inmates at the Avery County jail have been moved to Rowan County in response to the jail having no running water or power, according to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.

"There is no food and no water," the Rowan County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "No phone service.  We will begin trying to reach isolated pockets of people tomorrow with food and water.  More deputies headed up to help in the morning."

Residents reached out to WCNC Charlotte for information on Avery County inmates. The Avery County Sheriff's Office has not published any information on this decision.

Hurricane Helene hit Florida as a Category 4 storm on Thursday night before striking the Carolinas, devastating the western part of North Carolina. The death toll in North Carolina is up to 30 from Helene while 25 people have died in South Carolina.
