CORNELIUS, N.C. — Students were evacuated from Bailey Middle School on Monday due to a reported bomb threat against the school.
WCNC Charlotte has asked Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for more information about the incident. CMS confirmed it had received a threat at the middle school alleging that a pipe bomb was at the school.
As a result of the threat, canine units were dispatched to the school. A "thorough search" of the school building is underway, CMS said. As of 11:44 a.m., a preliminary search found no suspicious objects, though the investigation is still underway.
Based on the time of day, expected weather impacts, and the nature of the threat itself, school has been dismissed for the day.
The Cornelius Police Department posted on X that it was aware of a situation at the school. Parents were directed to pick up their kids at the former Foamex plant at the intersection of Bailey Road and Old Statesville Road. Officers confirmed buses were shuttling kids from Bailey Road Park to Foamex where they can be picked up by parents by class.
The Charlotte Area Transit System confirmed it provided assistance with buses to help get students shuttled over to Foamex.
Nearby Hough High School was placed on modified lockdown as a precaution due to its proximity tot he middle school, according to the district. School has since resumed.
The situation comes as CMS investigates an alleged threat at West Charlotte High School. A parent said their child was told by another student about a possible incident at the school on Monday. A district spokesperson told WCNC Charlotte dozens of schools statewide have received threats in the wake of the Apalachee High School tragedy in Georgia.
