BELMONT, N.C. — A security guard was hit by a driver who mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while leaving a polling place in Belmont on Election Day, investigators said.
The crash happened at the Gaston College campus mid-morning on Tuesday. Police said an 89-year-old driver was backing out of a parking spot when the security officer noticed he was about to hit a safety cone in the parking lot. When the guard tried moving the cone, the driver allegedly pressed the gas pedal and hit him. The collision sent the guard onto the car's hood and onto the pavement.
The security worker was taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK, Belmont Police said. No charges have been filed but the investigation remains active. The crash didn't disrupt election operations at the school and no one else was involved in the incident.
