BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Search teams on Sunday found the body of a young girl who drowned at a greenway in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young girl during this incredibly difficult time," Kim Duren, executive director of the Broad River Greenway, said.
The greenway was closed as crews worked to find the girl, who reportedly drowned Saturday evening.
A Facebook post from the Broad River Greenway's council around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday confirmed the area was closed to the public as rescue crews worked in the area.
"We understand that the Greenway is a cherished community space, and this closure may cause inconvenience. However, the safety of our visitors and the effectiveness of the rescue efforts are our top priorities," part of the post read.
WCNC Charlotte confirmed more details with Boiling Springs Fire & Rescue. Staff said the call came in just after 6 p.m. The search remained ongoing as of 10 p.m. Saturday when WCNC Charlotte called the department for information.
On Sunday, a greenway spokesperson announced teams had recovered her body.
"The loss of a young life is always profoundly tragic, and our thoughts are with those affected by this devastating event," Duren said.
She asked that community members make safety a priority and exercise caution when engaging in recreational activities near water.
"The collective efforts of emergency responders, volunteers, and community members involved in the search and recovery operation are deeply appreciated. Their unwavering dedication and commitment throughout this challenging incident have been commendable," Duren said.
Boiling Springs is located about 51 miles west of Charlotte.
