Boone man killed in Caldwell County motorcycle crash

The motorcyclist was identified as 64-year-old Robert Thomas Kampfer.

BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — A Boone man died in Caldwell County on Friday night after his motorcycle crossed the center line of the road and hit a Mercedes Benz, according to NC Highway Patrol investigators. 

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on U.S. 321 near Rocky Knob Road.

The motorcyclist was identified as 64-year-old Robert Thomas Kampfer. He died at the scene of the crash.

"The initial investigation indicates careless and reckless driving to be the contributing circumstance in the collision," highway patrol officials reported. 

The driver of the Mercedes Benz and a passenger were not injured.

No charges are being filed in this case.

U.S. 321 was partially closed in the area during the on-scene investigation.
