CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of people came together Saturday at Suffolk Punch in the South End to show support for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers who were hurt in the deadly ambush in east Charlotte this past April.
The event dubbed Craft Brewers for a Cause was a way to raise money for those officers and their families. The goal: to raise $50,000 for them.
“I just think it’s so important for them to – as well as all of us to – be able to fellowship with them, hold them up, and let them know we’re all here to support them,” said Michelle Hummel with Salute to Heroes, one of the event organizers. “Some of these officers actually worked for me previously at the police department. Being able to support them in this way and know they can just concentrate on healing, their mental health, and their families, is so important to me,."
The officers who were hurt also attended the event and shared they’re grateful for the outpour of support from the community.
“We appreciate the community supporting us because we try to support them every single day - and Charlotte’s always done that,” said Ofc. Chris Tolley. “As a police officer, you don’t really expect a whole lot in return for what you do every day so any little bit of someone stopping you to tell you 'thank you' really does mean a whole lot."
"Seeing this today with all the people means a whole lot to us and our families,” he added
