Brush fire burns near Huntersville

A "large brush fire" is burning near Sam Furr Road.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Smoke from a brush fire burning near Huntersville can be seen in the sky across northern Charlotte and adjacent suburbs.

The fire is burning along Mayes Road near Sam Furrd Road, which is also called North Carolina State Route 73. The fire is near Davidson-Concord Road. Cornelius Police have closed Mayes Road at Mayes Hall Drive to all traffic as a precaution.

Firefighters from Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson are battling the fire, which was described to be a "large brush fire." An entire pasture and barn structure are believed to be on fire.

Smoke from the fire can be seen from the WCNC Weather camera atop the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Winds are carrying the smoke to the east.

Firefighters are battling another fire near Harrisburg. The Midland Fire and Rescue Department said it is joining the Harrisburg Fire Department to battle a fire on Sternbridge Road near Pioneer Mill Road. They are among 10 different fire departments from two different counties battling this fire, according to the Midland Fire and Rescue Department.
