BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Officials are alerting residents that wastewater spilled into a creek earlier this week.
The spill happened at the Indian Hills Pump Station in Hickory which is near Drowning Creek, according to Burke County officials. The creek is connected to the Catawba River Basin.
Officials say the spill was untreated wastewater and happened on Tuesday around 10 p.m. and was stopped on Wednesday around 1 p.m. It's estimated that 4,000 gallons spilled into the river, according to officials.
The North Carolina Division of Environmental Quality was notified about the spill on Wednesday and is investigating the incident.
Officials say wastewater systems across the state were impacted by heavy rain during the week.
