CONCORD, N.C. — Cabarrus County nonprofit The Big E Life Changers Inc. hosted its second-ever suicide awareness 5K. It's part of the group's effort to help the community learn about mental health resources.
Saturday's event offered more than just a morning run, bringing a focus on mental health and reminding the community that you’re not alone.
"It just makes you feel alive and you're doing it with community," said LaDonte Lee, who participated in the 5K.
Hundreds of community members laced up their shoes for the cause.
“People who have the same concerns regarding mental health, mental wellness, suicide and you're walking alongside them. You're encouraging people, you tell people to go and that's much like the mental health journey," Lee added.
Melissa Dixon with The Big E Life Changers said they saw a need in the community.
“We saw the silence that has been impacting Cabarrus County for many years. And we felt that we needed to just dive in and start filling in those gaps that lack those awareness and resources in communities," she said.
The group is working to ensure that every step in the walk of life is aimed at success for the entire community.
“There's someone who may feel like they're by themselves," Lee said. "But if you look to your right, you look to your left. Look behind you, look in front of you have people around you.”
“We're here for you and regardless of whatever you may be feeling, don't give up," said Dixon. "We just wanna just continue. Just pour into as many people as possible every day, every hour, any minute.”
