Person killed in Caldwell County crash was not wearing a seatbelt, Highway Patrol confirms

The driver died at the scene due to his injuries.

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A person has died after a crash in Caldwell County Thursday morning. 

Around 4 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to the area of Burns Road and Oran Yount Lane, not far from the Tough Enough Rodeo and Campground.

During the investigation, officials learned a man was driving a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville west on Burns Road when he drove off the right side of the road. The car then struck an embankment, overturned, and came to rest on the driver's side, according to the NC State Highway Patrol.

The driver died at the scene due to his injuries. He has since been identified as 64-year-old Stanley Jeffery Burns of Granite Falls.

Highway Patrol said he was not restrained by a seat belt at the time of the crash, and was ejected. Officials do not currently believe alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.
