LANCASTER, S.C. — 19 days after officials said a man jumped into the Catawba River in Lancaster, the coroner's office says his body has been recovered.
The Lancaster County Coroner's Office shared on Facebook late Saturday night that the missing man, identified in the post and previous ones only as "Ty", had been recovered. While the post did not specifically share where Ty was found, but said he was located shortly after 10 a.m. The post acknowledged that finding Ty was an emotional day that involved lots of planning and resulted in his family finding closure. The coroner's office also acknowledged the work put in by first responders and plenty of support granted by neighbors.
"The community has been absolutely incredible and kept us going for the last 19 days with lots of snacks, drinks, and meals," part of Saturday's post read. Several posts featured thanks to churches, individuals, and businesses who brought the food to those involved in the search.
For the last 19 days, the coroner's office shared updates on the search to its Facebook page, sharing the efforts of agencies working to find Ty. At one point, the office said a group of people who showed up in a search area had falsely claimed to be his relatives, something the office verified was untrue after speaking with Ty's mother.
The coroner's office post on Feb. 24 included a reminder about the different duties that emergency personnel perform and requested donations to the SC Foothills Search & Rescue K-9 Team, which did their work at no cost to either the office or Ty's family.
Ty went missing on Feb. 5, 2024. Public safety officials said he jumped off of the Rock Hill Highway Bridge after driving a van onto it and abandoning it. The search forced the road to be closed for some time that day.
