CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After 20 years, Bishop Peter Jugis is retiring from the Diocese of Charlotte.
Jugis will be replaced by Father Michael Martin, who comes to Charlotte from Georgia after previously serving in Baltimore and New York, according to the diocese. Martin is currently the pastor of St. Philip Benizi Parish in Jonesboro, Georgia.
Martin has previously served in the Carolinas and told WCNC Charlotte's Richard DeVayne that he is excited to be coming to Charlotte.
Pope Francis made the appointment of Martin, who will be ordained and installed as the fifth Bishop of Charlotte during a ceremony on May 29 at St. Mark Catholic Chirch in Huntersville.
Jugis, 62, is retiring for what the diocese called "health limitations."
The Diocese of Charlotte has 530,000 practicing Catholics across 36 counties in western North Carolina.
