Organization seeking to improve lives to children, families in Charlotte

In just the past year, it served 54 Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, by providing 7,195 uniforms, 120 pairs of shoes, 2.136 coats and 5,635 books.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Assistance League of Charlotte has been a major part of the nonprofit community since 1992. 

Its mission statement is focused on helping children and families through community-based philanthropic programs. The program fights to educate, mentor, clothe and feed people who need it most.

In just the past year, it served 54 Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, by providing 7,195 uniforms, 120 pairs of shoes, 2.136 coats and 5,635 books.

The organization has five philanthropic programs: Operation Check Hunger, Operation School Bell, Mecklenburg County Teen Court, Assistance League Scholarship Fund, Assistance League Outreach and Assistance League Heart of the Home. All of its programs are funded, in part, from proceeds of its thrift shop on Old Pineville Road Road. The thrift shop has gently used and even new items, including jewelry, toys, household items,, shoes, sports equipment and electronics.

Assistance League volunteers help staff the store. 

The Assistance League of Charlotte Thrift Shop is near Tyvola Road and South Boulevard and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It also accepts donations, which can be dropped off on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
