CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Investigators announced what caused a fire at the old control tower at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Thursday morning.
The fire happened around 8 a.m. inside the old owner, which is being prepared for demolition. Four people were evacuated from the tower. No one was hurt, according to officials.
The Charlotte Fire Department determined the fire was started when a piece of molten metal fell down an elevator shaft onto insulation. Crews were able to get the fire out quickly without further incident.
The fire impacted the old control tower but didn't affect airport operations.
