Charlotte eyes hosting the Olympics

The city landed the Democratic National Convention, and is now reaching for the Olympic rings.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte landed the Democratic National Convention, and is now reaching for the Olympic rings.

The Chamber of Commerce is looking for big ideas and bringing the Olympics to Charlotte is probably the biggest that came out of their recent annual retreat.

Thirty years ago if somebody had suggested that we would be home to an NFL team, people would have told you that was crazy, said Bob Morgan.

The head of Charlotte's Chamber of Commerce says crazy can be a good thing, especially when talking about a push for Charlotte to host the Olympics.

Is it crazy? Absolutely crazy, but where do good ideas come from? They start with a crazy idea that then gets implemented.

The chamber s annual retreat recently pushed participants to come up with big ideas. Sort of a bucket list.

One of those is the whole notion we could host the DNC, Morgan said.

So, that's done, now what?

Part of the legacy of Denver hosting the convention in 2008 is they are now trying to land a winter Olympics.

One of Charlotte's biggest names, developer Johnny Harris, agrees and says we just need a passionate Charlottean to make it happen.

We need somebody to embrace that, and let s try to go get the Olympics, Harris said.

Harris says Charlotte is much like Atlanta was when they first started trying to be a host city.

They had a big airport...lots of parallels to Charlotte. It just takes a long time.

And he says we already have much of the necessary infrastructure.

Why not? Why not Charlotte, asked Morgan.
