CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The countdown to Election Day continues and as we inch closer there’s still work being done throughout Charlotte reminding community members to get out and cast their vote.
There are still plenty of efforts and boots on the ground to show a diverse swath of communities that their vote matters this election. Aimy Steele is the CEO of the New North Carolina Project. They helped organize the event titled "Produce the Vote" to get citizens to the ballots on the last day of early voting in the Tar Heel State. Steele and her team set up shop along Romare Bearden Drive, near an early voting site in Charlotte.
“It's consequential that people use today as the last day to take care of business before Election Day," she said. “It's important to remind Black and brown people about the importance of their vote because our vote truly does decide elections, and I think a lot of times, we as Black and brown people don't value how much our decision actually matters and what it means."
Steele's team has been busy.
“We knock on doors every single day of the week, and we work to flush people out of their homes and get them to go to early voting sites to vote," she noted.
They're not alone. Famous comedian Chico Bean, known for his tenure on Nick Cannon's MTV series "Wild'n Out," was also present to lend his voice about why voting matters.
“People need to exercise their right to vote, just to make sure that they get their opinion involved, get the access to information," he said.
