CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have announced a crackdown on violent crime ahead of an expected increase during the warm summer months.
CMPD Deputy Chief Jeff Estes made the announcement during a recent news conference, while also revealing that crime continued to go up in the first quarter of this year.
Police say they plan to focus on the most violent offenders and the most violent places in the city.
The police department launched a similar summer program in 2014, when police 21 percent fewer gun crimes during the 10-week initiative that they saw during the same time period in 2013.
Experts believe crime typically gets worse in the summer because teenagers have more idle time and people spend more time outside.
