Refurbished basketball courts opened in northeast Charlotte park

The courts at Sugaw Creek Park were refurbished by volunteers and ESPN employees to continue offering a safe space for youth.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The ribbon was cut just before tip-off Saturday at a pair of refurbished basketball courts in a northeast Charlotte park Saturday.

Sugaw Creek Park's basketball courts were given the refreshed look courtesy of community volunteers and ESPN, in collaboration with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, love.fútbol, and RISE. The aim is to provide safe spaces for youth to enjoy playing sports while also providing programming.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony and festivities were hosted by Roman Harper, a former Carolina Panther and current college football analyst at ESPN. He shared there's plenty in store for the basketball courts in the future.

"After today's celebration, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation will use this court to deliver its sports and educational programming for local residents throughout the year," he said, "including those who participate in after-school programs, summer camps, senior resident programming, and other community events."
