Charlotte residents can get free bags to pick up leaves this fall

The city has a mandate that requires leaves to be collected in paper bags, rather than plastic bags.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Temperatures and leaves continue to fall during the autumn season, leaving Charlotte residents with a lot of yard work to do.

The city of Charlotte is providing free paper collection bags for residents to use to pick up leaves in their yard. Leaf collection bags can be picked up at 1200 Otts St. on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Once the leaves are collected, residents can place the bags on the curb of their yard. City workers will collect the bags once a week.

Anyone using their own bags is advised that only paper bags will be collected. Debris in plastic bags will not be collected, according to the city of Charlotte. A mandate was issued two years ago prohibiting the collection of plastic bags for leaf collection.

Bags must weigh no more than 75 pounds.

“As the leaves in the Queen City begin to fall, our Solid Waste Services’ crews rise to the collection challenge,” Deputy Director of Solid Waste Services Eric DeLaPena said. “We want to educate residents on the correct preparation procedures to ensure our teams can provide the absolute best service possible on day of collection."
