Charlotte student's Instagram post removed over reference to 'team white supremacy'

The school principal said "the student did not immediately recognize [the caption] held a double meaning and was offensive."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A photo posted by a Charlotte Catholic High School student to Instagram with a reference to "team white supremacy" has been removed.

The school said the photo was posted to social media after a field hockey team scrimmage. The game consisted of a team wearing white and a team wearing blue. After the white team won the game, the photo was posted to social media and included the caption, which the school principal said, contained the "title the student did not immediately recognize held a double meaning and was offensive."

Principal Kurt Telford is calling the social media post a "teaching opportunity."

Telford wrote this statement which was provided to WCNC Charlotte:

"Earlier this week, Charlotte Catholic High School’s field hockey team held an intra-squad scrimmage between one team wearing blue jerseys and the other wearing white jerseys. After the “white team” won, a student posted a photo of that team on Instagram, adding a title the student did not immediately recognize held a double meaning and was offensive. As soon as the student was made aware, the post was immediately removed and the school addressed the matter with the teen. CCHS is using this moment as a teaching opportunity in an era of social media in which one poorly thought-out post can be hurtful."

No disciplinary actions for the students were publicly announced.

WCNC Charlotte has obtained a screenshot of the post but has decided to not show the image because of the age of those in the photo and to protect those who may not have been involved in the post.
