Charlotte woman honors 9/11 with annual tradition of giving back

A mother and daughter deliver food to local fire stations each year on Sept. 11.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Every year on 9/11, Kristin Tarleton and her daughter Madison go beyond simple remembrance. The two deliver food to local fire stations in memory of Kristin's friend, Captain James Amato, who was one of the first responders to the Twin Towers during the 9/11 attacks. This year, they are calling on their neighbors to help support the effort by donating food or supplies.

Kristin, who grew up in New York, explained how personal this day is for her.

“I grew up in New York, lost a friend in 9/11. He was a captain, first person in the Twin Towers. He was a, what they called, a fireman’s fireman,” Kristin said.

Captain James Amato’s dedication and bravery have inspired Kristin to give back each year. What began as a small gesture has since grown into a community-wide effort.

“Once I found out that he had passed... I wanted to do something to honor him. I would bring just two bags to the local firehouse... and then my daughter Maddie said, ‘Mom, let’s do more, let’s get the community involved,’” Kristin shared.

Over the years, Kristin and Madison have garnered support through social media and local donations. For Madison, learning about 9/11 in school feels different, knowing her family has a personal connection to the tragic day.

“It’s a lot different for sure... they tell you about it in school, but losing someone we knew makes it a lot harder,” Madison said.

This year, Kristin and Madison visited fire stations a few days early to allow friends to join them over the weekend. But, Kristin says, the effort is about more than just food.

“If they can’t donate money or food, even just writing a thank-you card means so much to them,” Kristin explained.

For Kristin, this tradition is not only a tribute to her friend but also a way to teach her daughter and the community about the importance of giving back.

“It’s been fun, and every year we take one of my friends along to help,” Madison said.

Kristin and Madison plan to continue their efforts for years to come, ensuring that the memory of those lost on 9/11 is honored through kindness and community service.
