CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte woman was arrested after being charged with filing fake insurance claims, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced.
Diamon Phoenix, 22, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense. Both of those charges are felonies.
Special agents said Phoenix tried to get money from State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. by filing a false homeowners’ insurance claim, saying that her gun had been stolen.
According to the arrest warrants, she filed the claim in April.
Phoenix was arrested on June 6 and released on a written promise to appear in Onslow County District Court on June 17.
“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said in a statement.
His office is asking the public to report insurance fraud or other "white-collar" crimes. Fighting insurance fraud costs a lot, he said, and it comes out of everyone's pocket.
“Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina,” Causey added.
People can anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll-free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
