CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was killed and another injured in a crash involving a suspected drunk driver in north Charlotte Thursday night.

Around 9:15 p.m., the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the crash in the 4600 block of Nevin Road, which is located near Ribbonwalk Nature Preserve. Police said a 2003 Infiniti G35 and 2004 Chevrolet Suburban were involved in the crash.

The driver of the Infiniti, identified as 23-year-old Leonel Rios Pacheco, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Suburban was taken to a hospital for injuries that aren't considered life-threatening.

CMPD said the preliminary investigation shows that Pacheco was speeding on Nevin Road when he passed a Cadillac Escalade in a no-passing zone and hit the Suburban head-on. Pacheco was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the Infiniti. The Cadillac didn't hit either vehicle, but the driver did hit a sign while trying to avoid the crash.

Evidence gathered at the scene suggests that alcohol may be a factor in the crash, as well as speeding and passing in a no passing zone.

No other injuries were reported.
