CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer died by suicide in west Charlotte on Monday, CMPD confirmed.

CMPD confirmed an officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Unfortunately, he died at the hospital due to his injuries.
In a briefing on Monday afternoon, CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings stressed the importance of supporting the mental health of law enforcement officers.
Residents report hearing dozens of first responders driving by with their lights and sirens on heading to the scene. CMPD advised people near the shooting to avoid the area and to "expect road closures and significant travel delays."
CMPD said the department is not looking for any suspects, and there is no danger to the public.
