Colombia opening consulate office in Charlotte

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it hopes to help nationals in the Queen City.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte is set to be home to a new consulate office serving Colombian citizens in the Queen City.

Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to WCNC Charlotte it has requested to open five new offices in the United States. The consulate aims to address the needs of Colombian citizens in the U.S. and protect their rights and welfare, according to a statement from the ministry.

In addition to Charlotte, Colombia wants to open consulates in Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Phoenix, Arizona; and Seattle, Washington. The ministry also wants to redistribute some of its consular districts.

"Together with U.S. authorities, we are making significant progress towards the creation of these new consulates and coordinating with local authorities in the respective states, including North Carolina, to establish the new consular districts. Our goal is to ensure that these consulates are fully operational as soon as the bilateral process is complete," said Mercedes Osma-Peralta, a spokesperson for the Colombian embassy.

Osma-Peralta said details about exactly where Charlotte's consulate office will be located are still being finalized and promised to share more details in the future, including an opening date.
