CHARLOTTE, N.C. — We're now officially six months away from the Summer Olympic games in Paris.
And, this morning, there is a hot debate over the way one of the competition's most popular events could be judged.
Artificial intelligence could soon judge Olympic gymnastics.
The technology is already in use. At the 2023 World Championships, AI was used for the first time.
While AI didn't replace in-person judges, it helped them review routines if a score was questioned.
The MIT Tech Review said the technology helps judges give more accurate scores.
The technology is able to catch every toe point and split angle during the quick routines.
But, long-time fans think AI judging takes away part of what makes the sport so special.
Judges base part of their scores on subjective concepts like artistry and performance that the current AI can't pick up.
That's why developers behind it remain adamant the AI is meant to help judges, not replace them.
