A string of 'close calls' at airports worrying airline officials

The FAA says there have been four times since 2020 when planes at Charlotte Douglas were within 300 feet.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Why are there more close calls in the skies?

Let's connect the dots.

Better technology and years of collaboration have reduced fatal crashes since 2009. That was the last major US airline crash when 50 people died in a plane crash in upstate New York.

But a new string of close calls is worrying airline officials.

While many cite strains stemming from the sudden bounceback in travel after the pandemic, others say it could be due to a lack of experience among newer pilots or distractions facing air-traffic controllers.

The FAA says there have been four times since 2020 when planes at Charlotte Douglas were within 300 feet. The most recent time was in February when a small plane didn't clear the runway edge before another plane landed.

Air-safety officials are taking a fresh look at their existing methods for tracking risks to spot what they may be missing.
