Automakers looking to revamp the future of cars

WCNC Charlotte's Ben Thompson takes a look at a new color changing technology that you may spot on roadways in the near future.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Technology is enabling us to do some pretty incredible things to the outside of our cars.

BMW is currently working on an experimental coating that acts as what it calls "digital ink."

This means, someday, your car could have more than 30 colors to choose from and even change color with the weather.

The tech that already allows your car to pay for highway tolls could soon help you pay for a lot more.

The emerging category of "in-car payments" would help you pay at a drive-thru and even automatically apply discounts to your "car orders."

As cars become more advanced, many of the issues that may have dragged you to a service center could one day be hands-free.

Think of it like a smartphone update. Your car would download updates overnight and be ready to roll by your daily commute.
