Why it's increasingly difficult to find jobs in software development

With the rise of artificial intelligence and an oversaturation of talent, actually getting a job as a software engineer is much more difficult now.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It's becoming especially difficult for software developers to find jobs, and experts say that isn’t changing anytime soon. The demands of the tech industry are changing, but much of it’s workforce is having trouble keeping up.

For years, software developers were in extremely high demand and those jobs paid very good money. But with the rise of artificial intelligence and an oversaturation of talent, actually getting a job as a software engineer is much more difficult now.

Not only is it difficult for folks to find jobs, the industry itself is shrinking.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Indeed shared postings for software development jobs are down 30% since 2020, and Layoffs.fyi found almost 140,000 tech workers have been laid off this year alone.

There are several issues to blame.

The Washington Post reports most companies are pulling back on entry-level hires, cutting their recruiting teams, and trimming excess projects that weren’t making much money.

Combine that with an overhaul in the artificial intelligence industry, and you get a very tough job market for any software developers who aren’t experts in that field.
