July is Disability Pride Month. Here's the history behind the celebration

The month is dedicated to raising awareness for the disabled community.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — July is Disability Pride Month, an opportunity to honor the history, achievements and struggles of those with disabilities.

It originated in 1990 to commemorate the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26. The act prohibits discrimination at work, in hospitals or doctor's offices and within transportation of any kind. It also makes it a requirement to have signs in parking spots and ensures rooms are accessible for everyone.

Disability Pride Month was officially celebrated in 2015 to mark the ADA's 25th anniversary. During celebrations, people raise the disability pride flag to represent different types of disabilities.

It applies to all kinds of disabilities. From things like physical disabilities like chronic pain or loss of a limb to people who have autism, ADHD, PTSD and even those who have invisible and undiagnosed disabilities.

The theme for 2024 is "We want a life like yours." It reflects on the disabled community's dreams for a life experience they are too often denied.
