You can start filing your taxes Monday. Here are free options for 2024

There's a good chance you don't have to pay to file your taxes this year.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Monday, Jan. 29, is the first day you can file your taxes, and there is a good chance you won't even have to pay to file this year.

If you've done your homework and are ready to file, there are plenty of free options that can help you get ahead without sacrificing much of your refund.

The Federal Trade Commission recently ordered the company behind the tax-filling software TurboTax to stop advertising free products and services unless they were actually free for all customers. The company had been accused of making it tough for the average American to navigate its system without being pushed into a paid option. Intuit ultimately reached a $141 million settlement with attorneys general in all 50 states over the allegations.

However, you don't need to use TurboTax to file for free. According to Consumer Affairs, there are several free options with the goal of helping folks with lower incomes get ahead during tax season.

If your adjusted gross income (AGI) is $79,000 or less, you qualify for the IRS Free File program, which includes guided tax preparation software for your federal taxes. All you'll need to get started is a copy of last year's tax return to access your AGI, a valid Social Security number and any tax forms, such as W-2s, 1099s and other relevant income documentation.

There's even the volunteer income tax assistance program for some people who qualify.

All to help make the cumbersome process a bit cheaper and easier.
