CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As temperatures continue to rise in the Carolinas, more than just the heat is making farmers sweat.
High temperatures and dry conditions are taking a huge toll on farmers and everyone's wallet.
North Carolina's seen several days with temperatures in the 90s and little to no rain so far in June. It means big cash crops are withering. We're talking about agricultural staples like soybeans, peanuts and even tobacco, which helped farmers cover their losses in the past.
Some farmers say the weather's been so bad they've even stopped tending to heartier crops like potatoes and corn.
Eventually, those losses will be passed on to consumers. Experts predict shoppers could pay 25% more for groceries this year because of worldwide droughts.
