NC elections upended by Helene: Voting could be delayed, ballots might be lost. Here's what you need to know

Previous hurricanes have led to some people casting their votes from makeshift tents set up by the National Guard.

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — The flooding, mudslides and other damage throughout western North Carolina in the wake of Helene are causing interruptions to the ongoing 2024 elections, but state officials say they’re working to minimize the fallout from the deadly and destructive storm system.

Previous hurricanes have led to some people casting their votes from makeshift tents set up by the National Guard, and that’s an option again this year, state elections director Karen Brinson Bell told reporters.

Early voting is set to begin Oct. 17.
