PARIS, France — The Olympics are right around the corner, but so far, hotels expecting a big boom for the games have been met with a big disappointment.
Leaders at hotels in Paris say they are not just having trouble filling up, they are losing business. Occupancy rates for hotels in Paris are down almost 25% this summer compared to non-Olympic years, a report from Fortune found.
While those numbers may be shocking, members of the hotel industry say the data is starting to make sense.
Ticket prices to ride the train in Paris have skyrocketed, the tourist tax has tripled, and the weather in the city is simply not pleasant in July.
Now, some people have said they are holding out for prices to come down, hoping to score a deal on a trip to the games. But the city’s tourism bureau says for now, it’s expecting most of the crowd at the Olympics to be Parisian locals.
