The history of Olympic pin trading

As athletes will tell you, it's about a lot more than taking home cool collector's items.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you’ve been watching any event at this year’s Summer Olympics or following any of the athletes on social media, you might have noticed some sporting pins from other countries.

These aren’t just random accessories, they’re part of a time-honored tradition that dates back over a century.

Every Olympics brings new pins designed by countries, sports teams and even brands. While the tradition started exclusively for athletes, it's grown to include fans who have turned pin trading into a full-blown Olympic phenomenon.

The roots of this tradition can be traced back to the inaugural modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Greek athletes were presented with cloth pins featuring the country's national anthem. This marked the humble beginnings of a 100-year-old tradition.

Today, pin trading is more than just a collector’s hobby. It’s a real icebreaker, especially in the bustling Olympic Village. Athletes from diverse sports and nationalities often use pin trading to break the ice and make new friendships.

So, the next time you see an athlete adorned with a colorful array of pins, remember you’re witnessing a century-old tradition that continues to bring people together in the spirit of the Olympics.
