The reason Olympic surfing is being held in Tahiti this year

Olympic organizers trying to showcase all of France and its territories

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Olympics are in Paris but one of the hottest events is almost 10,000 miles away.

Olympic surfing is being hosted in the small island nation of Tahiti. Paris officials say the decision to hold surfing there aligns with their goal of spreading the games across France.

Tahiti is the largest nation in French Polynesia and one of France's most well-known territories. The village where surfing is being held has been a world-renowned venue for surfers for decades.

But it's more than a picturesque paradise. It's dangerous because surfers have to be mindful of heavy waves and shallow reefs. While the 48 surfers competing are thousands of miles from the Olympic Village, they won't be missing out.

Surfers in the 2024 Olympics will be enjoying the Summer Games' first-ever floating Olympic Village, a massive cruise ship with a 24-hour dining hall, tattoo shop and water slide.
