Why your next 911 call may be answered by a drone

The company behind the drones says dispatchers can deploy the technology to a reported crime within 90 seconds.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The future of law enforcement could soon come from the skies thanks to a new program that may bring drones to police departments all over the country.

Flock Safety currently makes cameras and gunshot detection systems for U.S. police departments. Now, the company is piloting a program to make drones that could fly over traffic and assess situations before first responders get there.

For example, when a Flock camera detects a stolen car, dispatchers can deploy a drone to the location within 90 seconds.

There are concerns about the program. Some people worry that drones could invade people's privacy and violate the Fourth Amendment.

Right now, the police drones are only being used in Scottsdale, Arizona. Flock says they are expecting to roll the program out in several cities soon. It's unclear if any law enforcement agencies in the Carolinas will be involved.
