CHARLOTTE, N.C. — New research shows there may be a new way to make roads safer for everyone.

A solution to dangerous streets and roads could be right underneath our feet.

Lets connect the dots.

According to a John Hopkins study, narrow driving lanes could save lives and the environment. The study found wider lanes increase the risk for accidents.

Specifically, 12-foot wide lanes had more wrecks than those with a width of 9-feet or less. Experts said this is because having more room makes drivers' believe they can increase their speed and drive a little less attentively.

Narrower lanes also help the fight against environmental issues. This is because smaller lanes condense more drivers in less space, use less asphalt, and take up less land consumption.

While narrow roads can keep drivers safer, experts said that leftover space can also be used as a buffer between cars and the bike lane.
