CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Salvation Army's annual Red Kettle Campaign kicked off Friday for the 118th time in Charlotte. The campaign is one of the oldest fundraisers of its kind in the United States, and spare change really can make a big difference.
Let's connect the dots.
The campaign started in 1891. Its history in Charlotte dates back to the early 1900s. It's come a long way since then.
Last year, the campaign brought in $102 million for charities nationwide. The money helps provide year-round services to families experiencing homelessness as well as youth programs in the community.
In the Queen City, there are more than a dozen bell-ringing locations, including outside several stores for Hobby Lobby, Sam's Club, Belk, and Walmart.
Don't have spare change? It's not a problem -- those interested can still donate online or through the Salvation Army's mobile app. Even for those unable to contribute money, volunteers are always needed.
It's a good reminder that even in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, donations matter.
