CHARLOTTE, N.C. — South Carolina was the fastest-growing state in the U.S. last year and it's not expected to slow down anytime soon.
The Palmetto State grew by 1.7% in 2023 to a total population of 5.3 million people. And since the birth rate actually dropped, most of that growth was people moving to the state.
So what's the draw? Experts say affordable housing is a big one. South Carolina's housing costs are one-fifth lower than the national average. Then, combine that appeal with a a low cost of living, thriving state economy and natural beauty, and it's no surprise why so many folks are calling South Carolina home.
However, the boom is only expected to happen in certain areas. Rural areas are shrinking, while cities like Charleston and Columbia are expected to see the most growth.
Experts predict South Carolina's population will expand by 19% over the next 20 years.
