Cutting the cord (again): Why so many people are giving up streaming in 2024

For many cord-cutters, streaming has gone the way of cable thanks to rising costs. Here's how services like Hulu and Netflix are fighting to keep customers.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The new year means a lot of folks are checking their finances to see what costs they can cut, and new data shows many people are ditching their streaming service.

It's getting a lot harder for streaming services to hold onto their customers. Let's connect the dots.

A new report shows more people are dropping their streaming services than ever before. About one-fourth of Americans say they've canceled at least three streaming services in the past two years.

The biggest complaint is rising costs, as many people say it's starting to feel like paying for cable again. To fight another wave of cord cutting, streaming services are trying different ways to stop subscribers from leaving.

Some streaming services, like Amazon, are offering cheaper ad-supported tiers. Others are offering bundles, giving viewers more options at a discounted rate.

Ultimately, most of the major movie and TV companies have sunk a lot of money into streaming, so don't expect things to get cheaper any time soon.
