'Israel's right to defend itself' | Gov. Cooper voices his support for Israel

Cooper's post says in part, "Hamas cannot be allowed to continue its reign of terror that also hurts the Palestinian people in many ways."

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper took to social media over the weekend to show support for what he calls "Israel's right to defend itself."

His post says in part, "Hamas cannot be allowed to continue its reign of terror that also hurts the Palestinian people in many ways."

Cooper went on to say "anti-semitism, islamophobia or racism of any kind will not be tolerated in North Carolina."

Israel has ramped up its airstrikes across Gaza, including in areas where civilians have been told to seek refuge.

A U.S. official said Monday that Washington has advised Israel to delay a possible ground invasion to allow more time to try and secure the release of captives held by Hamas. Israel has allowed two small aid convoys but no fuel to enter the besieged coastal enclave, where there has been a power blackout for nearly two weeks. Hospitals say they are scrounging for generator fuel in order to keep operating life-saving medical equipment and incubators for premature babies.

Palestinian officials and witnesses say heavy airstrikes across Gaza demolished buildings, killing hundreds of people.
