CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The city of Charlotte is giving the community a chance to strengthen relationships while staying active with its “Corridors Connect” project. Throughout the month of October, there are several events that shut down streets to cars and allow people to walk, bike, and discover more of Charlotte for the day.
The Corridors of Opportunity program leads the charge in organizing the events. Its goals include promoting connectivity, wellness, and equity in Charlotte’s diverse neighborhoods.
“We want to make sure that we're honoring and celebrating the neighborhoods that we work within,” Aisha Sabur, a member involved with the program.
Each event gives community members a chance to walk, bike, or even dance in the street without the worry of a vehicle. Sabur shares with WCNC that local assists take part in each event as well. She said, “It's a way for the community to connect with all of our programs and initiatives, and to also come out and see all the county resources and city resources that are available to them.”
Anita Howze grew up in Charlotte and appreciates the thought of communities coming together through the project.
“The fact that they have this open street, it brings people out to the community, get to know each other internet, you know, network, you know, connect just to connect,” Howze said.
There are two more Corridors Connect projects scheduled in October:
- October 22: West Boulevard – Arbor Glen Outreach Center – 1520 Clanton Rd Charlotte, NC 28217 and Amay James Recreation Center – 2425 Lester St, Charlotte NC 28208
- October 22: Freedom Drive/Wilkinson Boulevard – Ashley Park Elementary – 2401 Belfast Dr, Charlotte, NC 28208 and Dowd Park – 2521 Greenland Ave Charlotte, NC 28208
