YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina man is dead after being shot by a York County Sheriff's deputy early on Sunday morning, according to the sheriff's office.
Dense fog blanketed the stretch of Alexander Love Highway, between Lincoln Road and Highway 321, as South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Investigated the scene of the officer-involved shooting for several hours.
The road reopened to traffic around 8 a.m. that morning, but the investigation is still ongoing.
The county coroner's office identified the man who died at the scene as 62-year-old Charlie Baker of Clover.
On Monday, SLED released a statement on what the agency said led up to Baker's death.
According to the statement, the shooting happened after the York Police Department initiated traffic stop and car chase involving an armed man.
Then, SLED said, deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office "encountered the subject," who barricaded himself inside his car along Alexander Love Highway.
The York County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to the area.
SLED said the team "negotiated with the subject and shot the subject."
Officials said no deputies were physically hurt.
York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson identified the deputy who fired his rifle, killing Baker, as Lance Corp. Berlin Gipson.
The sheriff said Gibson, who had been a deputy with the York County Sheriff’s Office since June 2021, has been placed on paid administrative leave as part of protocol.
The last officer-involved shooting for York County's sheriff's office was Sept. 14, 2022, according to Sheriff Tolson.
SLED noted that this was the eighth officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2024. In 2023, there were 43 in the state.
