CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a deadly crash that happened in south Charlotte late Wednesday night.

Officers said Carowinds Boulevard was shut down around 10 p.m. in both directions near the intersection of Choate Circle due to the investigation.

On Thursday, CMPD provided more information about the crash, saying it involved a motorcyclist and a 1998 Honda Accord. Police say the motorcyclist was traveling northwest on Carowinds Boulevard when it collided with the driver's side of the Accord as the car turned onto the road.

The motorcyclist was separated from the motorcycle and was taken to a hospital for treatment. However, CMPD said he later died shortly after arrival. CMPD said impairment and speed appear to be factors in the crash on the motorcyclist's part. He also was not reportedly wearing a helmet when the crash happened.

The driver of the Accord was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital.
